THE MOOD OF THE EUROPEAN UNION FOR INTEGRATION: AN OPPORTUNITY WE MUST NOT MISS

The latest decisions and messages from European officials represent a positive signal for Montenegro regarding possible membership in the European Union, and it is the right moment to use them wisely. We once again got the opportunity and the mood of the European Union for integration, which the decision-makers must recognize in the right way and intensify activities in fulfilling the temporary benchmarks. It is necessary to forget all divisions, to include all structures, where the joining process must be set as a priority.

Although these indications are positive, the current atmosphere on the public scene, which is marked by party fights and censuses in the shadow of identity issues, creates an unfavorable environment for putting the topic of the EU agenda at the center of public discourse.

That is why it is the right moment for the Government and Parliament of Montenegro and other Montenegrin institutions to use all possible resources and mechanisms at their disposal and to be agile in implementing activities aimed at the European Union. In addition, after the establishment of technical and administrative conditions, as one of the first steps we expect the appointment of the chief negotiator for conducting negotiations with the EU.

We must focus on the rule of law and human rights, given their importance in the new methodology, where these areas are located in Chapters 23 and 24. However, it is important to note that this does not mean neglecting the other chapters.

At this crucial moment, we invite everyone to get involved, because this is a race that all of Montenegro must win. Never before have we had such an open door, and that is why it is necessary for the public to focus on this very important issue that is of interest to all of us. That is why we are sending an appeal to the media and the NGO sector to give their contribution, and to the decision makers to recognize them as important partners who can significantly contribute to the path to the EU.

At this stage, we are witnessing, on the one hand, several significant developments on that path, such as the election of the seventh judge of the Constitutional Court, the election of three members of the Judicial Council by the Parliament of Montenegro and several important investigations, which represent a significant step towards creating the conditions for continuation of key reforms.

On the other hand, we also heard a lot of rhetoric, without many concrete actions that would accompany assurances and promises.

Once again at the end, we invite all social actors to actively engage and achieve results in order to achieve real progress and shape the future of Montenegro according to European standards.
